What is a fuel cost calculator?
A fuel cost calculator estimates the total petrol or diesel cost for any trip based on distance, your vehicle's mileage, and the current fuel price. It helps you budget trips, compare routes, and understand your monthly fuel spend.
Formula used
Fuel required (litres) = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/L)
Fuel cost = Litres × Price per litre
Cost per km = Total cost ÷ Distance
How to use this calculator
- Enter distance in km
- Enter your vehicle's mileage in km/L (check your car manual or measure it)
- Enter current petrol/diesel price per litre
- Click Calculate
Example
Example 1 — Mumbai to Pune (150 km):
Distance: 150 km | Mileage: 15 km/L | Petrol: ₹103/L
Fuel needed = 150 ÷ 15 = 10 litres | Cost = 10 × ₹103 = ₹1,030
Example 2 — Annual commute cost:
Daily commute: 40 km | Mileage: 18 km/L | Petrol: ₹103/L
Daily cost = 40 ÷ 18 × ₹103 = ₹229/day
Monthly (22 days): ₹5,038 | Annual: ₹60,456
Petrol vs CNG comparison (same 40 km commute):
Petrol at ₹103/L, 18 km/L: ₹229/day
CNG at ₹75/kg, 28 km/kg: ₹107/day → saves ₹122/day = ₹32,296/year
Frequently asked questions
Fill a full tank, reset the trip meter. Drive normally until near empty, refill to full. Mileage = km driven ÷ litres filled. Repeat 2–3 times for accuracy.
Petrol cars: 12–20 km/L. Diesel: 15–22 km/L. CNG equivalent: 25–30 km/kg. Heavy traffic and hilly terrain reduce mileage 20–30%.
Yes — running AC reduces mileage by 8–15% depending on the car and conditions. At highway speeds, closing windows and using AC is actually more fuel-efficient than open windows due to drag.
