What is an electricity bill calculator?
An electricity bill calculator estimates your monthly electricity cost from units consumed (kWh), your state's tariff rate, fixed charges, and taxes. It also shows the cost of individual appliances so you know exactly what is driving your bill.
Formula used
Energy charge = Units consumed × Rate per unit
Subtotal = Energy charge + Fixed charges
Total = Subtotal × (1 + Tax%÷100)
1 unit = 1 kWh = running a 1,000W appliance for 1 hour
How to use this calculator
- Enter units consumed (from your bill or meter reading)
- Enter rate per unit (₹/kWh — check your state's tariff)
- Add fixed charges and tax %
- Click Calculate
Example
Example — 2BHK apartment, 300 units/month:
Units: 300 | Rate: ₹7/unit | Fixed: ₹130 | Tax: 16%
Energy = ₹2,100 | Subtotal = ₹2,230 | Tax = ₹357
Total bill: ₹2,587/month
Monthly cost of common appliances:
| Appliance | Usage | Units/month | Cost @ ₹7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC 1.5 ton | 8 hrs/day | 360 | ₹2,520 |
| Refrigerator (300L) | 24 hrs/day | 50 | ₹350 |
| Washing machine | Daily (1 hr) | 36 | ₹252 |
| LED TV (50") | 5 hrs/day | 15 | ₹105 |
Frequently asked questions
Your meter shows cumulative kWh. Subtract last month's reading from this month's = units used. Smart meters show this in the utility's app.
1 unit = 1 kWh = running a 1,000W appliance for 1 hour, a 100W bulb for 10 hours, or a 10W LED for 100 hours.
Set AC at 24°C (each degree lower adds ~6% to consumption). Switch to LED lights (80% less power). 5-star BEE-rated appliances use 20–30% less energy. Unplug chargers and TVs on standby.
