What is ideal weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is a target weight range considered healthy for a given height. It is used by doctors to calculate medication dosages, assess nutritional status, and set weight goals. This calculator uses four widely-cited formulas and shows their range.
Formula used
Four formulas — all based on inches above 5 feet (60 inches):
Hamwi: Male: 48 + 2.7 × (H−60) Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (H−60)
Devine: Male: 50 + 2.3 × (H−60) Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (H−60)
Robinson: Male: 52 + 1.9 × (H−60) Female: 49 + 1.7 × (H−60)
Miller: Male: 56.2 + 1.41 × (H−60) Female: 53.1 + 1.36 × (H−60)
Result is in kg.

Example
Example 1 — Male, 175 cm (5'9"):
Height above 5ft = 9 inches
Hamwi: 48 + 2.7×9 = 72.3 kg | Devine: 50 + 2.3×9 = 70.7 kg
Robinson: 52 + 1.9×9 = 69.1 kg | Miller: 56.2 + 1.41×9 = 68.9 kg
Healthy range: 68.9 – 72.3 kg
Example 2 — Female, 160 cm (5'3"):
Height above 5ft = 3 inches
Hamwi: 45.5 + 2.2×3 = 52.1 kg | Devine: 45.5 + 2.3×3 = 52.4 kg
Range: 51 – 53 kg
Quick reference (female, Devine formula):
| Height | Ideal weight (approx) |
|---|---|
| 155 cm (5'1") | 47–50 kg |
| 163 cm (5'4") | 51–55 kg |
| 170 cm (5'7") | 57–62 kg |
Frequently asked questions
No single formula is best for everyone. Devine is most used in clinical settings. The range across all four formulas is the most useful output — aim to be somewhere within that range.
Not necessarily. Athletes often weigh more than IBW due to muscle mass. IBW is a health guideline, not a rigid target.
These formulas were developed primarily on Western populations. For South Asians, some experts suggest the lower end of the IBW range is more appropriate given higher cardiometabolic risk at lower body weights.
